Sedation Dentistry Hillsboro, OR Unfortunately, we understand that some people experience fear or anxiety when they think about a trip to the dentist. In some cases, these phobias can even prevent a person from receiving the dental care they need to maintain proper oral health. At Infinity Dental Care, we offer sedation dentistry to create a more comfortable and enjoyable experience for our patients. You, too, may qualify for sedation dentistry, especially if your anxiety dictates the frequency of your visits. During your next appointment, ask us about your sedation options. Dr. Kalluri and the rest of our team have received extensive training for the safe and effective use of several types of sedation. Levels of SedationWe offer four options for sedation/anxiety control:
The level of sedation you receive depends on the medication we use, and the severity of your anxiety. Patients with significant anxiety may need to be placed in a deeper level of sedation. Regardless of the sedation you receive, most medications are used in conjunction with a local anesthetic. A local anesthetic numbs your mouth to reduce or eliminate pain and discomfort. Oral AnxiolysisOral anxiolysis is also extremely common in dentistry. This type of sedation typically comes in the form of a pill or liquid. The medication typically makes you drowsy or groggy, but still alert enough to answer questions and understand your surroundings. Nitrous Oxide SedationNitrous Oxide Sedation is an induced, controlled state of minimal sedation, produced solely by the inhalation of a combination of nitrous oxide and oxygen in which the patient retains the ability to independently and continuously maintain an airway and to respond purposefully to physical stimulation and to verbal command. One will be awake but relaxed. This will provide one with relaxation and disassociation and relief from pain perception. Local anesthesia will be given alongside to achieve pain control for the procedure. Minimal SedationMinimal sedation is a gentle way to help you feel calm and relaxed during your dental visit. It’s usually given as a single pill you take before your appointment and may sometimes be combined with nitrous oxide (laughing gas). You’ll feel more at ease, but you’ll still be awake, aware, and able to respond to your dentist. To keep you safe, we’ll provide simple pre-appointment instructions you’ll need to follow. It's important to follow preoperative instructions strictly and have a designated escort drop off and pick up and monitor postoperatively for at least 6 to 8 hours. Moderate (Parenteral) SedationModerate sedation is a deeper level of relaxation, often recommended for patients with higher anxiety or for longer procedures. Medication is given through a small IV in your arm or hand, and sometimes nitrous oxide is used at the start to help you relax quickly. You’ll stay conscious, but you may feel drowsy and remember little or nothing about the procedure. Throughout your visit, we’ll closely monitor your comfort and vital signs to make sure you’re safe from start to finish. It's important to follow preoperative instructions strictly and have a designated escort drop off and pick up and monitor postoperatively for at least 6 to 8 hours.
