Align and Shine: The Do’s and Don’ts of Invisalign for a Stress-Free Experience

Invisalign is a great way to straighten your teeth without the conspicuous hassle of brackets and wires. However, success largely depends on how you care for your aligners and comply with treatment. These clear trays may be invisible, but that doesn’t mean you can ignore them! Continue reading to find a go-to guide for what to do and what to avoid while wearing Invisalign.

Do: Wear Your Invisalign Aligners as Directed

You should wear your aligners for 20 to 22 hours per day without exception. The best way to do this is by only removing them when eating, drinking anything besides water, or brushing your teeth. The more consistent you are, the better your results will be.

Don’t: Eat or Drink in Your Trays

It may be tempting to sip a coffee or sneak a snack with your aligners in, but this is often a bad idea. Doing this can stain or damage the plastic and trap food particles beneath. This can lead to delays in treatment and even cavities if sugary beverages seep into the trays. Always take them out first.

Do: Rinse and Clean Your Aligners

Every time you remove your aligners, rinse them with cool water to prevent a sticky buildup of plaque and bacteria. Clean them gently with a soft toothbrush and mild, clear soap. Toothpaste contains mild abrasives that can be too rough and scratch the plastic, so steer clear when you’re cleaning your trays.

Don’t: Leave Your Aligners Out

Aligners can dry out, collect bacteria, or even get lost if you leave them on a napkin or in your pocket. Always store them in their case when not in use. Otherwise, you might find yourself digging through the trash or running after a pet to get them back!

Do: Brush and Floss Before Putting Your Aligners In

Putting your aligners back in without cleaning your teeth seals everything you ate and drank against your enamel. This will not only stain the aligners over time but could also cause decay or bad breath. So, make sure you brush and floss every time you’re about to put your aligners back in.

Invisalign is a fantastic way to achieve a straighter smile, but only if you’re consistent with your care. By sticking to these simple tips, you’ll protect your investment and help your treatment stay on track. If you’re ever unsure where a habit belongs on this list, your dentist is just a phone call away.
