Simple mistakes can shorten the lifespan of your new smile. Here’s how to care for your dentures correctly to get the most from your investment.

Give Your Mouth a Break

Your dentist will instruct you to wear your dentures for 24 hours after receiving them. After the first day, make it a habit to remove them at night. They restrict blood circulation to your gums. Your mouth needs a break or your gums can get sore and inflamed. Not to mention, your mouth is a hotspot for oral bacteria growth at night, which can damage your dentures over time. It’s best to remove your dentures before heading to bed to keep your mouth healthy and your dentures functioning at their best.

Use the Correct Cleaning Products

It is best to use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a mild hand soap or dishwashing liquid to clean your dentures. Hard bristles and abrasive toothpaste can scratch them, which can affect their appearance. Bacteria and food residue can get trapped in the crevasses, leading to odors and damaging your denture over time.

Keep Your Mouth and Dentures Clean

Brush your dentures every day to remove plaque and food residue. Don’t forget to clean your gums and tongue. Place your dentures in an overnight soaking solution to keep them moist and to kill any bacteria missed by brushing.

Keep Your Dentures Moist

If your dentures dry out, they can warp and crack. Never expose your denture to hot liquids or heat to prevent warping.

Prevent Accidental Damage

Accidents can happen. Place a towel on the counter to soften the impact if you accidentally drop your teeth.

Visit Your Dentist Regularly

Besides caring for your dentures at home, visit your dentist every 6 months for a checkup. They will also check your dentures to ensure you don’t need any adjustments. Relining your denture regularly will ensure a snug fit and promote the lifespan of your denture.

With the correct care, your dentures can last for 5 to 7 years before needing to be replaced. If you’re interested in longer-lasting results, ask your dentist about the benefits of implant dentures.
